
Michael Cohen is Professor of International Affairs and Director of the Graduate Program in International Affairs (GPIA) at The New School University in New York. He founded the GPIA in 2001. From 1972 to 1999, he worked at the World Bank and was responsible for much of the urban policy development of the Bank over that period. He has worked in over 50 countries and was heavily involved in the Bank’s work on infrastructure, environment, and sustainable development. He has published widely including several books on urban development, Africa, and evaluation of the impact of development assistance, and has advised governments, U.N. Habitat, NGOs, and academic institutions around the world. He served as the president of the International Institute for Environment and Development, and as a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Panel on Infrastructure and also on the Panel on Urban Dynamics. He received a PhD in Political Economy from the University of Chicago, in 1971.
