Personal Statement:
My goal as an environmental studies professor is to enable my students to develop the skills to analyze and interpret complex relationships among the natural systems, communities, and built environments in which they live. I use teaching methods that foster active learning and civic engagement, and techniques that encourage students to explore patterns, system structures, relationships, and theoretical models.

Research Interests:
For twenty years, my scholarly and professional research has explored the process of involving citizens in urban environmental decision-making. Building on my work on citizen participation and the environment, I have focused my research on the urban food system. Current projects include studies of innovative approaches to integrating food production into the urban and peri-urban environment and research on civic agriculture.
