Jürgen von Mahs was born in Mexico City and spent his childhood in Mexico, Chile, Turkey, and Germany.

In 1991, he began his undergraduate studies at the University of Bamberg, Germany where he majored in Geography, Communications, and Political Science. In 1993, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the University of Southern California where he received his MA in Geography. He received his PhD from the University of Southhampton, UK in Sociology and Social Policy.

In 2005, he acccepted a joint faculty position at The New School where he is Assistant Professor of Urban Studies.

Personal Statement: 
I consider my work as a teacher to be of great importance. I am guided by my desire to promote tolerance and critical thinking in my students. I hope to empower them by expanding their knowledge, skills, and creativity.
